For the first time in the history of UN peacekeeping operations, the UN headquarters chartered a flight of Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier of Bangladesh, to carry Bangladeshi peacekeepers. On this chartered flight, Bangladeshi peacekeepers will join the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic, Minuska. This information was given in a press release of Bangladesh Permanent Mission in New York. In recognition of Bangladesh's invaluable contribution to UN peacekeeping operations for more than three decades, the United Nations chartered the country's own aircraft to transport Bangladeshi peacekeepers. This is a milestone. The Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations signed the Biman Charter Agreement with the United Nations Headquarters, maintaining overall coordination and close communication.
Bangladesh time Today (Thursday) Biman Bangladesh Airlines chartered flight with 179 peacekeepers of Bangladesh Army and Air Force left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic. The contingent includes 125 members of the Armed Utility Helicopter The unit, 20 members of the Quick Reaction Force Company's vanguard, and 34 peacekeepers from the Minuska mission trapped by the Covit-19. The flight is scheduled to arrive in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, on the morning of May 29.
At present, 6,543 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are serving in 09 UN peacekeeping missions around the world, of which 1,061 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are serving in the MINUSCA mission in the Central African Republic.
The UN peacekeeping mission began operations on April 10, 2014.
