Anisuzzaman, the national
professor of Bangladesh, passed away. He was hospitalized for some time due to
heart and kidney complications. He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has
expressed their condolences over the death of the professor.
The professor passed away at the
Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on Thursday. He had been in the hospital for
some time due to heart and kidney complications. Professor Anisuzzaman took up
teaching as a profession but his role was also very important for literary-research
writing and organizational activities.
Anisuzzaman was born on 18
February 1937 in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district. His father ATM
Moazzem. He was a famous homeopath. Although mother Syeda Khatun was a
housewife, she had a habit of writing. Grandfather Sheikh Abdur Rahim was a
writer and journalist. They were five brothers and sisters. Anisuzzaman, the
youngest of three sisters. The elder sister also used to
write poems regularly.
Anisuzzaman started his education
at Park Circus High School in Kolkata. After completing study from class III to class VII at PCHS, he moved to Bangladesh and got admission in class VIII in
Khulna district school. A year later he moved to Dhaka with his family and was
admitted to Priyanath High School (now Nawabpur Government High School). After
completing his secondary education from this school in 1951 and his higher
secondary education from Jagannath College in 1953, he was admitted to the
Bangla Department of Dhaka University. He graduated from Dhaka University in
1956 and obtained his master's degree in the same subject in 1957. At the age
of 22, he joined Dhaka University as a teacher in the Bangla department. He has
been awarded numerous awards including Bangla Academy Sahitya Puraskar-Ekushey
Padak for his outstanding contribution in the field of education, art, and
literature. He has been the chairman of the editorial board of the art magazine
'Jamini' and 'Kali O Kalam'.
Anisuzzaman was a Bangladeshi
writer and national professor. He is an Emeritus Professor of Bengali Language
and Literature at Dhaka University. He took part in the Language movement and the
mass uprising of the seventies (1969) and the liberation war of Bangladesh in
1971. He was also a member of the National Education Commission headed by Dr.
Kudrat-e-Khuda in 1972 after the independence of Bangladesh. His research on
the history of Bengali literature is particularly noteworthy.
Anisuzzaman has won multiple
awards for his contributions to education and literature. He received the
Bangla Academy Literary Award from the Bangla Academy in 1970 for his
contribution to essay research. For his contribution to education, he was
awarded the second-highest civilian honor 'Ekushey Padak' by the Government of
Bangladesh in 1985. He was awarded the third-highest civilian honor, the Padma
Bhushan, by the Government of India for his contribution to education and
literature. In 2015, he was awarded the highest civilian honor, the Swadhinata
Puraskar, by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to literature.
