Former health minister and Bangladesh Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim will be buried at Banani Cemetery tomorrow (Sunday). Awami League office secretary Biplob Barua confirmed the matter to media.
It
is learned that Tanmoy Mansoor, the eldest son of Mohammad Nasim, lives in The United States. He will leave for the country today. He will arrive on Sunday.
Earlier this morning, Mohammad Nasim died at the Bangladesh Specialized
Hospital in the capital. Hearing the news of the death, Awami League leaders
and activists and ministers rushed to the hospital. Mohammad Nasim, who has a
colorful political life, has been the Minister in charge of Health and Family
Welfare, Home, Housing and Public Works and the Ministry of Posts and
Telecommunications in the Government of Bangladesh. He is survived by his wife
and three children.
Mohammad
Nasim. Former health minister and spokesman for the Awami League-led 14-party
alliance. He was born on 2 April 1947 in Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj district.
Father M Mansur Ali. Who was one of the organizers of the liberation war of
Bangladesh. He was also the Prime Minister in the cabinet of the
post-independence Bangabandhu government. Mother Mosammat Amena Mansur.
Nasim
holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Jagannath College (now
Jagannath University). Nasim was an active member of the student movement in
the sixties of the last century. After independence, he became a member of the
presidium of the Juba League in 1993.
After
the assassination of Bangabandhu, Baba Mansur Ali was also killed in jail.
After that Nasim became active in Awami League. Then he also had to go to jail.
Nasim
was elected the first Member of Parliament in 1986. He then became the Chief
Whip of the Opposition in Parliament. At that time he was the publicity
secretary of Awami League.
He
was elected Member of Parliament in 1996 and 2001, 2014, and 2016.
After
Sheikh Hasina formed the government in 1996, Nasim became the Minister of Posts
and Telecommunications. In March next year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also
gave him the charge of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
Nasim
served as a minister in two ministries simultaneously until March 10, 1999.
Later, he was given the responsibility of the Home Minister in a cabinet reshuffle.
Although
the Awami League returned to power after winning the 2008 elections, Nasim did
not get a place in the service cabinet. However, Sheikh Hasina made him the
health minister in the next term in 2014.
Besides
politics, Nasim was involved in various social welfare activities. He has set
up several educational institutions in his area including Dhaka and Sirajganj.
He
had a colorful political life. As a child of a political family, he became
involved in politics from his student days. Until the last day of his life, he
was one of the members of the presidium of the ruling Awami League.
